MISS HAMILTON OF SUNDRUM. Scottish, Reel (cut time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of this tune in print in Ayrshire fiddler-composer John Riddell's 1782 collection (p. 51). Sundrum House was the manor of John Hamilton of Sundrum, who married Lilias Montgomery, daughter of Alexander Montgomery of Coilsfield and Lilias Montgomery (her mother), heiress of Skelmorley. The daughter Lilias was also sister to Hugh Montgomery, the Earl of Eglinton. John French (1753-1803) composed a reel called "Sundrum House," and another for the lady of the house, Mrs. Hamilton (see "Mrs. Hamilton of Sundrum's (Junr.) Reel" for more).
