The reel was entered as "Polly Wills" into Book 2 of the c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894). However, it was earlier printed in Alexander's Fifty New Scottish and Irish Reels and Hornpipes (c. 1826) under the title "Drowsy Maggie (4)"
