POLLY PUT THE KETTLE ON [3]. American, Reel (cut time). USA; western North Carolina. G Mixolydian/Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Phillips): ABB'B' (Krassen). Marcus Martin, a fiddler from Ararat, N.C., recorded the tune in Asheville in August, 1946, for field recorded Artus Moser for the Library of Congress (AFS 07955 A). The tonality shifts between modes in the tune, with the 'b' note being variously flat and natural in Martin's version. Madison County, N.C., fiddler Byard Ray (1910-1988) had his version from local fiddler Manco Sneed, who learned it from J. Dedrick Harris. Their version is more strongly mixolydian in character throughout.
