REEL [122]. Canadian, Reel (cut timer). Canada, Gaspe, Quebec. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. This untitled reel is from the repertoire of fiddler Erskine Morris, one of some thirty-five tunes he played on fiddle and harmonica on a 1990's home cassette recording. Morris was from Douglastown, at the eastern tip of the Gaspe Peninsula, which was a mixed anglo-francophone community. The English-speaking populace was descended largely from Irish and Scottish immigrants in the 19th century. The tunes from that community similarly reflect a cultural music mixture. This simple and 'square' single reel, however, sounds English in origin and seems to have survived the cultural melting pot (although no antecedents have yet been located).
