The air appears in Musick's Recreation on the Lyra-Viol (1652), Pills to Purge Melancholy (1707 & 1719), however, the original ballad dates to Elizabethan times and first appear in 1614. Chappell (1859) says a later version of the air was known as "Hunting the Hare (1)."
