ROYAL CHARLOTTE, THE. English, Jig (6/8 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody is unique to Charles and Samuel Thompson’s 1765 country dance collection. The title may refer to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818) who was, by marriage to King George III, the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland from her wedding in 1761. It could also refer to the royal yacht, The Royal Caroline II, built in 1749 to replace the original royal yacht. It was renamed in 1761 as The Royal Charlotte in honor of the marriage of the royal marriage.
