SWALLOW [1], THE. AKA and see “Swallow Sloop of War.” Scottish, Reel (cut or whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB (Gow, Lowe, Skye): AABB' (Athole). John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Edinburgh music publisher Neil Stewart's Collection of the Newest and Best Reels or Country Dances (1761, p. 36). It was also entered into the large 1770 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician William Vickers.
