THERE WAS A LADY (Bhi Bean Uasal). AKA and see “Do Bhi Bean Uasal,” “There Once Was a Young Lady.” Irish, Air (3/4 time). D Major/Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The melody appears in Petrie’s 1855 collection, though in a different version than that which is still well-known today. Petrie offers some caustic comments in his introduction regarding the sobriety of the individual who wrote the verse in which the Kilkenny marble is mentioned.
