The tune is presumably the vehicle for a song, but it is not Irish in origin. It was published as a country dance melody in London by music publisher John Johnson in 1758 in his Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8.

Source for notated version : - credited to Chicago Police Sergeant James O’Neill, a fiddler originally from County Down and Francis O’Neill’s collaborator [O’Neill]. James may have learned the tune from his father's repertory.
