This tune "is another air acquired by the editor's father, through Dr. Morison from Lews, formerly mentioned. The words contained reflections on various events which befell them during the Canadian expedition, particularly during a winter's quarters in Ft. Stanwix, of which they were heartily tired; absence and distance from their native country, thus reviving all their predilections for it. On this occasion Dr. Morison composed his unequalled Gaelic verses to the Garb of Old Gaul" (Fraser). Fort Stanwix, referenced in Fraser's note, was an English colonial outpost on the site of Rome, N.Y., controlling a principal route from the Hudson River to Lake Ontario. Originally a French trading center, it was rebuilt by the English general John Stanwix in 1758. The British colonial leader Sir William Johnson signed an important treaty with the Iroquois there in 1768. The fort fell into disrepair until early in the American Revolution, when it was rebuilt by the patriots and called Fort Schuyler.
