TWELFTH STREET RAG. American, Ragtime (2/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "wikipedia:Twelfth_Street_Rag" was composed by Texas musician and composer wikipedia:Euday_L._Bowman (1887-1949) in 1914. It was one of a series of rags that Bowman wrote during or after a period in which he worked as a pianist in some bordellos of Kansas City. These pieces, including "Sixth Street Rag", "Tenth Street Rag", "Eleventh Street Rag" and "Twelfth Street Rag," were named after streets of Fort Worth's redlight district. The tune was recorded by numerous artists, among them Louie Armstrong (1927), Duke Ellibgton (1931), and, in 1935 for Bluebird Records, by the Novelty Four: Marion Brown (guitar), Cliff Vaughn (guitar), Pink Lindsey (fiddle) and Raymond Lindsey (tenor banjo). Unfortunately, Bowman sold the composition for $100, giving up royalty rights, although he managed to regain them later in life.
