Biographical notes
ANTONIO GAUTHIER (1899-1927) was born in the central Quebec community of Moose Park (called Manseau since 1922), although by the 1911 census, the Gauthier family had moved to Shawinigan Falls. He was a skilled fiddler with a trained technique, although he also seems to have retained vernacular fiddling characteristics as well. In 1922 he married Aldéa Dupont (1902-1989), originally from St-Jean-des-Pilies (near Shawinigan), in Montreal. Antonio a recorded sixteen sides in two recording sessions in 1926 for Compo-Starr Records. He died quite young, a year after his recordings were issued and a year after the birth of his only child. For more information, see the biography in Jean Duval's Huit violoneux québécois méconus de la période 1922 à 1935 (2022, pp. 35-37) [1].
