Biographical notes
JOSEPH "JOE/JOS" BOUCHARD (1905-1979) grand master of the "vrai jeu du Québec" and child prodigy (by age 14 he was a competent violinist), received his primary folk music tutelage from Elie Sioué, a Native American of the Réserve De l'Ancienne-Lorette. As with many musicians, he was unable to make a living from his music and had to hold a position at Canadian National Railway (CNR) in Québec City for 32 years. He performed with accordionist Théodore Duguay's Montagnards Laurentiens on the radio station CHRC in 1948. He also played in the Lac-Saint-Jean region.
In 1938 Bouchard began recording for RCA Victor's Bluebird label, completing thirteen 78 RPM records. Bouchard also made two 78s in 1946 for Columbia and in later years recorded for Carnaval (the LP Reel Carnaval CS-530), Tamanoir (Portrait du vieux Kébec, vol 13, TAM-513) and Opus (Jos Bouchard: Violoneux Île d'Orléans OP-221). In 1975 he performed at the Mariposa Folk Festival.
He remains a reference for his style and sensitivity.
