DeFrantz explain the dances at N:youtube.com [1] H:Buck dancing is a folk dance that originated among African Americans during H:slavery era, and was originally associated with the North Carolina Piedmont. H:Later, the dance was also associated with the blues. The steps were weighted H:heavily on the feet, with the body well-grounded, and it was performed usually H:be men as a solo dance. Later developments included the 'buck and wing' in H:which 'wing movements' (large movements of the arms and legs, like flapping) were H:added to buck steps. Jig dancing was a lighter, quicker and more airy dance step.
