N:The song was supposedly written by a U.S. Naval officer during the war of 1812, N:according to information in an 1843 edition arranged by Francis Brown. It became N:increasingly popular during the Civil War. N:Quadrille sets made up of popular songs were very common in the 19th century. The N:American Quadrille was originally published by famous bandleader Jullien in 1853.
