LADY DOUGLAS'S REEL. AKA and see "All Round the Room," "Light Horseman's Reel (The)," "Shropshire Reel." Scottish, Reel (4/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The reel is attributed to the mysterious "W.J." who is credited with a half-dozen tunes in publisher James Alexander's Alexander's 50 New Scotch & Irish Reels & Hornpipes (c. 1826). The volume was edited by a "professional musician," who is perhaps "W.J." himself, or "W.J." may have been merely a contributor. The reel may or may not predate Alexander's collection, however, for it appears in the 1823 music manuscript collection of musician Robert Hughes (Whitchurch, Shropshire) as "Shropshire Reel." The reel was entered twice into the c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim musician Stephen Grier (see "All Round the Room").
