BANJO QUADRILLES NO. 5, THE. AKA and see "Miss Lucy Long," "Arkansas Traveler (1)." American, Irish; Quadrille part (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABCD. See note for "Banjo Quadrilles: No.1" for Conor Ward's history of this quadrille set, fashioned from popular blackface minstrel tunes into a popular dance set. Regarding "Banjo Quadrille No. 5", Conor writes:
In the place where a surname of one of the four members of the ‘Virginia Minstrels’ appears on each of the first four quadrilles, the word “Finale” is printed on the fifth. The structure seems to be A(B+C+B) in all cases except the Delany manuscript, where the final B section is missing. The A part corresponds to the second part of the American reel “The Arkansas Traveller”, while the B part corresponds to the most common text of the song, “Miss Lucy Long”, the music of which was composed by one of the troupe’s original members, Billy Whitlock. The C part seems a variation of the B part and the formation (B+C+B) may simply be an elaboration of the song text done specially for the quadrille set.
