NEWS OF THE VICTORY, THE. AKA and see "Jolly Tars of the Victory," "Tars of the Victory," "Tars of Victory," "Willow Tree (2) (The)". English, Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. The tune commemorates HMS Victory, Admiral Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, fought off the coast of Spain in 1805. It was a great victory for the British navy, although it cost Nelson his life. The melody appears as "Tars of the Victory" in the music manuscript copybook of Rev. R. Harrison (Cumbria, c. 1815).
